TODAY'S LEAD

Three payer contracts went to the wire in 14 days. Alignment answered with 34% fewer ER visits and a new 2027 pitch, network certainty.

A modern hospital corridor at golden hour, soft natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows

Two weeks after carriers filed their 2027 Medicare Advantage bids, the next fight is already visible, and it is about networks, not benefits. Inside 14 days, three provider-payer standoffs resolved at the brink, BCBSM and Michigan Medicine on May 27 (4.7 million members), BayCare and UnitedHealthcare on May 29 (roughly 150,000 Florida lives), and Premera and MultiCare extending to June 30 in Washington. The pattern is the story, 2027 network-disruption risk is running hot across Medicare Advantage just as national carriers telegraph benefit cuts. On June 2, Alignment Healthcare, a TRAFFIK client, dropped the cleanest counter-narrative available, its 2025 Impact Report showing 34% fewer ER visits, 44% fewer skilled-nursing admissions, and 100% of members in plans CMS rates four stars or higher for a second straight year. The 2027 marketing pivot writes itself, move smaller mission-driven plans like Alignment and Clever Care off “more benefits” and onto “consistent benefits, stable network, proven outcomes” before the AEP creative locks. —LM

No fresh public news this week from Clever Care, Edwards Lifesciences, JenaValve, PIH Health, Santa Clara Family Health Plan, Loma Linda, Balt, CalVEBA, VOOM, or TOI. The action this week is the three-deal payer-contract cluster above and Alignment's report.

Alignment's 2025 Impact Report posts 34% fewer ER visits across its MA membership.

Alignment Healthcare published its 2025 Impact Report June 2, documenting 34% fewer ER visits per 1,000, 34% fewer inpatient admissions, 44% fewer skilled-nursing admissions, and 27% lower 30-day readmissions versus 2019 Medicare fee-for-service benchmarks, with 100% of members in plans CMS rates four stars or higher for a second straight year.

BCBSM and Michigan Medicine reach a long-term contract, the system stays in-network for 4.7 million members.

BCBSM and Michigan Medicine announced a new long-term contract May 27, ending a public reimbursement dispute ahead of a June 30 renewal date. The deal keeps the academic medical center, affiliated facilities, clinics, and physicians in-network for BCBSM's more than 4.7 million members. Final terms were not disclosed.

BayCare and UnitedHealthcare strike a last-minute deal, roughly 150,000 Florida lives stay covered.

BayCare and UnitedHealthcare announced a new multi-year agreement May 29, keeping BayCare's physicians, facilities, and services in-network across West Central Florida for around 150,000 members and preventing a coverage disruption. Terms were not disclosed. It is the third major hospital-payer near-miss in two weeks.

Premera and MultiCare extend to June 30 in Washington, the second extension in two years.

Premera Blue Cross and MultiCare reached a verbal agreement May 30 to extend their reimbursement negotiation, keeping MultiCare facilities in-network for commercial and individual Premera members until at least June 30. MultiCare already went out-of-network with Regence Blue Shield on May 10, dropping roughly 10,000 Yakima patients.

Our take
Network certainty is now a benefit, not a footnote. Three contract scares in 14 days mean our plan clients will field member-anxiety calls the next time a system threatens to walk, and the plans that win 2027 are the ones already saying “consistent benefits, stable network, proven outcomes” with a hard number behind it, exactly what Alignment just published.
What we ship
Turn Alignment's Impact Report into a broker leave-behind by Fri Jun 5, and build an outcomes proof-point framework Clever Care and Eternal Health can publish before AEP (creative brief to the account team by Sat Jun 6). Stand up a reusable network-disruption member-comms kit (holding statement, FAQ, provider-search CTA) that Clever Care, Eternal Health, and CalVEBA can deploy within hours of any contract scare.

Grand Junction and John Wayne Airport had no fresh, verifiable in-window press this week (the standing Grand Junction roundabout and SNA concessions stories are in LOCAL INTEL below).

KDOT revises the Polk-Quincy closure plan, I-70 still shuts through downtown Topeka June 8.

I-70 between Topeka Boulevard and 8th Avenue fully closes at 12:01 a.m. June 8, then KDOT revised the supporting closures June 3, Kansas Avenue (June 7-10), Topeka Boulevard (June 12-15), eastbound I-70 at MacVicar now held until June 28, and S.E. 4th Street between Madison and Monroe closing June 16 into late fall. Through-traffic routes to I-470.

CDOT closes US 50C lanes at 28th Lane in Pueblo County for culvert repair June 8-12.

Beginning June 8, CDOT crews repair a culvert under US Highway 50C at 28th Lane in Pueblo County, with traffic reduced to one lane each direction from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through June 12. It is the third southeast Colorado work zone CDOT has stood up in two weeks.

CDOT starts I-70 Straight Creek culvert repairs in Summit County, weekends and Fridays kept clear.

CDOT began I-70 Straight Creek culvert repair work in Summit County June 1, scheduling weekday lane closures with no closures on Fridays, holidays, or weekends to protect mountain travel volume through fall 2026, a deliberate choice to keep peak recreational traffic moving.

Our take
The I-70 Topeka shutdown is a six-month campaign, not a closure alert, and the June 3 schedule revision proves it, the dates already moved once before the road even closed. Front-load a refreshed detour message the week of June 8, then let the long reopening runway carry a sustained FY27 safety story instead of burning the budget on week one.
What we ship
Ship KDOT a refreshed I-470 detour set and a June 8 driver FAQ on the corrected schedule (MacVicar to June 28, S.E. 4th from June 16) by Fri Jun 5. Hand CDOT one rolling southeast-Colorado work-zone-safety template (swap-in route and dates) so US 50C, Straight Creek, and the Ordway five-county work run under a single recognizable campaign through fall.

Clients · MIRACLES FOR KIDS · BREATH OF SPIRIT
Pulse
No fresh in-window news from Miracles for Kids or Breath of Spirit (MFK's record $350K Miracles in Bloom tea was April 30, the carry-forward asset). The sector story is federal, and the OBBBA 0.5% AGI charitable-deduction floor still makes bunched gifts and DAF timing the dominant Q4 conversation.

OMB proposes putting political appointees in charge of approving every federal grant.

OMB published a proposed rewrite of the Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200) May 29 requiring senior political appointees to personally review and approve every discretionary federal award before it issues, with appointees barred from deferring to peer reviewers. Agencies also gain authority to terminate awards at any time, and federal funds are blocked from DEI, certain gender-related, and voter-registration activities. Comments are due July 13, with an October 1 target effective date.

The same proposed rule lets agencies restrict which nonprofit categories can win awards.

NACUBO's June 1 read confirms the proposal could restrict eligibility for certain nonprofit organization categories, expand applicant risk assessments, broaden noncompliance penalties, and convert portions of the Uniform Guidance from guidance into binding regulation. The public comment window closes July 13, 2026, a concrete action date for boards, not an abstract threat.

Our take
Any nonprofit with a federal grant line now faces award-timing and renewal risk that no creative can fix, so fundraising plans have to assume revenue could move or stop after October 1. The July 13 comment window is the one concrete lever, and the offset is individual major gifts and DAF outreach built now, before the rule lands.
What we ship
Draft a one-page funding-resilience brief for MFK and Breath of Spirit by Fri Jun 5 that maps any federal or pass-through exposure, models the gap if an award slips past October 1, and shifts budget toward major gifts and DAF outreach. Pulse
SEQUEL's other concepts (Body20, iFlex, Beem) had no fresh in-window news. The Pilates Addiction expansion and the Club Pilates consolidation moves are the week's signals.

Pilates Addiction opens its next 300-territory block after selling out year one.

Pilates Addiction, a SEQUEL Brands concept, awarded 300-plus franchise territories in its first year and on June 2 launched a second 300-territory block, with 700-plus territories still open and 125 studios projected to open in 2026. The franchise-sales engine is now running ahead of unit openings.

Aligned Fitness buys six Club Pilates studios, enters New Jersey and signals more roll-ups.

On June 3, Aligned Fitness Holdings acquired six Club Pilates studios in central New Jersey from two franchisees, pushing its portfolio to 61 studios across multiple states and opening its first New Jersey market. Leadership said it is actively looking for more franchise partners and acquisition targets, evidence the category is consolidating around single-studio owners.

Voss Capital keeps the heat on Xponential, points to the gap between XPOF stock and Club Pilates' private value.

In a June 1 strategic update, Voss Capital reiterated its call for a full strategic review of Xponential Fitness, citing the gap between XPOF's public stock and its estimate of the private-market value of one core brand, Club Pilates. It sustains the pressure that began with Voss's March letter and the April announcement that an investment bank is advising on alternatives.

Our take
The risk in the SEQUEL story just flipped, from selling territories to opening 125 studios on time, while a maturing, activist-pressured competitor and an active roll-up market open a recruiting window for a founder-led, owner-operator brand. The marketing job is now filling memberships in brand-new studios and recruiting single-studio operators who want a system that helps them win, not a brand being rolled up.
What we ship
Send Anthony a one-page studio-opening demand playbook (presell membership funnel, per-market geo-targeted paid social, opening-week offer math) tied to the 125-studio 2026 target by Tue Jun 9. No in-window institutional news from Champlain, CSUN, UVA, Central Washington, Colorado Mesa, or UMaine, the moves this week are federal-policy shifts that hit several clients at once. Workforce Pell also launches July 1 (see EVENTS) and is a live opportunity for the workforce-program clients.

Grad PLUS loans end July 1, and new caps strand med, law, and dental borrowers.

Grad PLUS stops for new borrowers July 1, replaced by hard caps of $50,000 per year ($200,000 lifetime) for professional programs and $20,500 per year ($100,000 lifetime) for other graduate programs. New field-level data shows close to 80% of dentistry students, 58% of medical students, and 28% of all graduate students borrow above the new limits.

NAFSA: only about 5% of schools grasp how fast “duration of status” is ending.

At the 2026 NAFSA conference in Orlando, a poll of roughly 200 international-education staff found only about 10 hands signaling their administrators grasp how fast DHS is moving to end visa duration of status. A four-year program limit, with formal USCIS extensions required after, is expected for new students once the rule is finalized.

Kansas State seeks a 4% resident / 5.5% nonresident tuition hike, Regents vote in June.

President Richard Linton recommended a 4% resident and 5.5% nonresident increase for fall 2026, one of five of six Kansas public universities seeking 3.5-6% hikes after the 2026 Legislature cut the university system. The Kansas Board of Regents votes this month, so families will be price-shopping as the number goes public.

Our take
Two cliffs land before peak recruiting, a July 1 grad-loan wall and a fall visa-status deadline, and they reward the schools that communicate first. The institution that publishes a clear aid explainer and a credible immigration-support story this month converts the prospects the slower ones lose to panic.
What we ship

The summit and its new national livestream are the week's signals. Everything here is media math, audience concentration and reach, not a position on the program.

TPUSA's Women's Leadership Summit lands in San Antonio June 5-7, this week.

Turning Point USA holds its 2026 Women's Leadership Summit June 5-7 at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter, with tiered registration including a student tier. The single venue concentrates a young in-person audience that conservative advertisers compete hardest for, the kind of event that typically generates organic social volume exceeding paid CPMs in the same window.

TPUSA adds national streaming distribution for the Summit via Great American Pure Flix.

On June 1, Great American Media announced it will livestream the full Women's Leadership Summit on Great American Pure Flix, with live plus on-demand access for subscribers, extending the June 5-7 San Antonio event to a national at-home audience and widening the measurable reach beyond the room.

Our take
We advise on the math, not the politics. The summit plus a national livestream is an organic-amplification moment to measure, if event week lifts engagement, paid pacing can pull back, and if CPMs soften we hold the line. Nothing here is a stance, it's media buying.
What we ship
Pull TPUSA campaign performance for the June 5-7 window against the prior baseline to size the organic lift, and check whether Meta or YouTube CPMs move during the event so we can adjust pacing. Add the Great American Pure Flix livestream to the measurement plan as a second reach surface.

Cannes Lions (June 22-26) is three weeks out with a new AI award category and a human-plus-AI integrity check, see EVENTS below. Last week's Publicis-LiveRamp and Omnicom direct-to-publisher stories carry forward as backdrop, both fell outside this week's seven-day window.

OpenAI turns on conversion-optimized ChatGPT ads with a June 5 early-access deadline.

One week after switching on cost-per-action ads, OpenAI moved to full conversion-optimized campaigns inside ChatGPT. Any advertiser with at least one conversion registering through the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API by June 1 gets early access June 5, everyone else waits for broad release, turning ChatGPT into a measured performance channel on par with Google and Meta.

Omnicom heads to Cannes Lions 2026 for the first time as the merged, post-IPG holding company.

Omnicom confirmed it will attend the 73rd Cannes Lions (June 22-26) as the new combined Omnicom, its first festival appearance since closing the IPG acquisition, anchored by its Omni data and AI platform. Cannes is where the new Big Three make their AI-and-scale pitch to the same enterprise clients independents court.

Our take
ChatGPT just stopped being a branding experiment. With conversion optimization and a hard June 5 access deadline, any direct-response client needs measurement (Pixel or CAPI) live before they can buy, and the agency that owns that measurement owns the channel. Holdco consolidation at Cannes is the other half, when buying concentrates into a few AI-mediated surfaces, an independent's edge is a clean supply path and senior attention the networks can't match.
What we ship

KDOT shuts all lanes of I-70 through downtown Topeka June 8, then revises the supporting closures, resetting the public-messaging clock.

All lanes of I-70 between Topeka Boulevard and 8th Avenue close at 12:01 a.m. June 8 for the Polk-Quincy Viaduct replacement, with through-traffic routed to I-470. On June 3, KDOT revised the supporting schedule, the eastbound I-70 closure at MacVicar now holds until June 28 and S.E. 4th Street between Madison and Monroe closes June 16 into late fall. Drivers who memorized the original dates will hit closures they didn't plan for, so the detour push needs to run the week of June 8, not the one-time notice issued in May.

Grand Junction · GRAND JUNCTION · COLORADO
The city broke ground June 1 on a $5M Broadway and 23 Road roundabout, a three-way partnership with CDOT and developer Redlands 360, which is adding 1,300-plus homes. It is the most visible proof point yet for the “growing and managing it” narrative.

CalVEBA · SAN DIEGO · CALIFORNIA
CalVEBA opened a $2.6M, 13,000-sq-ft South Bay Resource Center in Chula Vista on April 17, co-funded with Scripps Health. It serves the 40,000-plus of CalVEBA's roughly 100,000 San Diego-county members who live in South County, with care coordination, health coaching, and behavioral-health support.
The physical care-access push is a tangible retention proof point. Build creative around the new center for South County, local radio plus targeted digital plus community-event presence, before a competitor fills the awareness gap.
Eternal Health · BOSTON · MASSACHUSETTS
Massachusetts now has 103 Medicare Advantage plans for 2026 (up from 96), one of the most crowded markets in the country for a small unrated startup. BCBSMA and UnitedHealthcare both lost in-network access to Mass General Brigham primary care as of January 1, creating a real opening to market network stability to disrupted seniors.
The MGB primary-care disruption is still live for affected BCBSMA and UHC enrollees. Run search and social to Boston-area Medicare beneficiaries on a no-hassle, $0-premium, no-network-drama message.
BCBSM · DETROIT · MICHIGAN
BCBSM and Michigan Medicine reached a tentative contract agreement May 27, just ahead of the June 30 deadline that would have pushed Michigan Medicine out of network. The deal preserves in-network access across Michigan Medicine hospitals, physicians, and clinics after months of public contention.
The near-miss generated months of negative network-access press. Move quickly on a your-care-is-secure retention message to existing members before Humana or Aetna recruits the nervous switchers.

SCFHP launched an Enhanced Care Management partnership with Upward Health in April, delivering in-home care coordination to Medi-Cal members with complex needs (serious mental illness, substance use, housing instability). It lands as California pauses new Medi-Cal enrollment for undocumented adults starting January 1.
The Upward Health deal is a strong community-first proof point. Activate it through trusted-messenger channels (community health workers, faith orgs) to reinforce loyalty ahead of the enrollment freeze.
The Oncology Institute · CERRITOS · CALIFORNIA
TOI guided to 2026 revenue of $630-650M (up roughly 28%), driven by delegated capitation contracts in Florida and dispensary volume, projecting its first full year of adjusted-EBITDA profitability as a public company.

The grand opening is a major local story, 700 jobs and Irvine as a US neurovascular hub. Use it as a community-relations and employer-brand moment to establish Balt's American identity.
State of Colorado · DENVER · COLORADO
Colorado's Drought Task Force, activated by Gov. Polis in March, recommended moving to a Phase Three emergency on June 2. Roughly 94% of the state is in drought, with toxic algae at two state parks, record-low rivers, and ranchers hauling water or selling livestock.

Miracles for Kids · LAGUNA NIGUEL · CALIFORNIA
Miracles for Kids' 6th Annual Miracles in Bloom Tea at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel on April 30 raised a record $350,000. The sold-out event drew 300 Orange County philanthropists and funds the Pillars Program bill-pay assistance for families of critically ill children.

Flex 30 plus a live BETA partnership is a tangible career-ROI proof point. Lead enrollment messaging with that combination rather than abstract outcomes.
CSUN · NORTHRIDGE · CALIFORNIA
CSUN launched its era as a California Black-Serving Institution in early 2026, one of only 31 nationwide and one of three CSUs to earn the designation. Its Black Matador Excellence summer bridge program scales from 60 students in 2025 to 100 this summer.
The BSI designation is a headline equity milestone. Amplify it to reach Black and underrepresented prospective students across the San Fernando Valley, where CSUN already has a home-field advantage.
University of Virginia · CHARLOTTESVILLE · VIRGINIA
UVA's Innovation Hub, a lab-school partnership embedding its Education, Engineering, and Data Science schools into every 7th and 8th grader's curriculum in Charlottesville City Schools, won a state Programs That Work award and expands to 6th grade in 2026-27. The Board also approved a 3.6% undergraduate tuition increase.
The Innovation Hub is a direct community-goodwill story, UVA as a city-embedded anchor rather than a walled campus. That narrative is recruitable locally and differentiates UVA from flagship peers.
Colorado Mesa University · GRAND JUNCTION · COLORADO
Colorado Mesa and Grand Junction High School announced eight $5,000 renewable scholarships for GJHS students in May, on top of a January guaranteed-admission STEM pipeline with Central High and CU Boulder. CMU is also 17 months into a $177.5M campus expansion driven by a record 35% freshman jump in Fall 2024.
CMU is locking in the Grand Junction feeder pipeline with direct high-school deals while building the housing to meet demand. Push an invest-locally, stay-local message plus new-facility quality.
Central Washington University · ELLENSBURG · WASHINGTON
CWU is cutting varsity men's and women's rugby (a $900K annual saving) amid declining enrollment and a $29M-plus biennium funding gap. In April, around 30 students protested the administration's handling of neo-Nazi flyers, following a February faculty no-confidence vote against the president.
Significant internal headwinds, governance controversy and program cuts. Enrollment messaging must project stability and momentum, leading with GNAC athletics, career outcomes, and regional job placement.
University of Maine · ORONO · MAINE
UMaine proposed a 3.9% in-state tuition hike (to $13,230) in March, tied to an $18M shortfall requiring $11.3M in cuts. At the same time it is investing $177M-plus across 120-plus capital projects in 2026 and reaffirmed its Carnegie R1 research designation.
A tuition increase and budget cuts landing alongside a major capital push creates tension. Lean enrollment creative on R1 research status, construction momentum, and value-versus-flagship positioning.
SEQUEL Brands · IRVINE · CALIFORNIA
SEQUEL launched its fifth franchise concept, Ultimate Longevity Center, in December with biohacker Gary Brecka and Tony Robbins' Lifeforce platform, targeting the longevity economy with experiential-wellness and premium-concierge tiers. It arrives as Xponential Fitness reports slowing franchise sales under a new CEO.
Run paid search and social to franchise investors in the SoCal and Phoenix corridor now, while Xponential's instability is in the news. Lean on Geisler's track record and the Brecka/Robbins credibility, not the modalities.
Turning Point USA · PHOENIX · ARIZONA
Phoenix is the de facto headquarters of the US out-of-home advertising industry, with Lamar, Clear Channel, OUTFRONT, and Branded Cities all maintaining offices there. TPUSA also drew a large, registration-verified audience to a Phoenix-area event in April, producing a documented high-propensity attendee file.
We advise on the math, not the politics. Phoenix's OOH infrastructure and large captive event audiences make it efficient for event-adjacent media buys, with geo-targeted digital OOH near venues and post-event retargeting on the verified attendee list.
VOOM · BRENTWOOD · TENNESSEE
Voom Medical Devices, maker of the Bunionplasty 360 Repair procedure and its Revcon single-screw system, closed a $30M debt-and-equity round led by Avenue Capital, earmarked to expand its program to 1,000-plus trained Bunionplasty surgeons nationwide off a base it describes as 3x year-over-year growth.
VOOM is onboarding surgeons at scale, so the conversion point is surgeon discovery and credentialing, not device specs. Target foot-and-ankle orthopedic surgeons by specialty and geography, with landing pages built around the one-on-one training program.
Edwards Lifesciences · IRVINE · CALIFORNIA
Edwards reported Q1 2026 net sales of $1.65B, up 12.7% in constant currency, with TAVR up 11% and the TMTT mitral/tricuspid segment up 42%, and raised full-year guidance to 9-11%. It also reaffirmed its Every Heartbeat Matters initiative, targeting 2 million more underserved structural-heart patients by 2030.
Edwards is growing its premium core and funding global access at the same time, two messages that reinforce each other for payors, physicians, and policymakers. Align any Edwards work to both the performance and the patient-access narratives.
John Wayne Airport · SANTA ANA · CALIFORNIA
John Wayne Airport's $700M-plus Capital Improvement Program (2025-2028) includes a nearly $50M terminal concessions overhaul. Eight new local and national operators, including Wahoo's Fish Taco, Left Coast Brewery, and The Habit Burger Grill, took over roughly 37,000 sq ft, with a February 19 ribbon-cutting and a projected $11.4M in annual revenue on 15-year leases.
SNA is telling an OC sense-of-place story tied to real capital investment, deliberately choosing Costa Mesa, San Clemente, and Irvine tenants. Pitch campaign work that leans into that local-brand differentiator.

Competitor moves

SEQUEL ↔ Club Pilates / Xponential Fitness
Voss Capital's June 1 update argues the gap between XPOF's roughly $268M market cap and its estimate of Club Pilates' private-market value alone justifies a full strategic review, with a sale process active.
If Club Pilates sells to private equity, Pilates Addiction gets a well-capitalized direct rival overnight. The zero-debt SEQUEL model is the differentiator, and Geisler should be on record before the deal closes.
Clever Care ↔ Alignment Healthcare
Alignment's June 2 Impact Report posts 34% fewer ER visits and 44% fewer skilled-nursing admissions across its MA members, with 100% in 4-star-plus plans.
Alignment is setting the outcomes benchmark in Orange County. Clever Care's cultural-affinity wedge holds, but the proof-point gap on clinical outcomes is widening.
Champlain · CSUN · UVA ↔ Canada / Europe (international recruiting)
NAFSA 2026 surfaced the looming end of duration-of-status and possible OPT limits, with only 5% of US schools said to grasp the severity.
Prospective international students weighing a four-year capped US visa against Canada or Europe will move toward whoever communicates security and OPT support first. First-mover messaging is the whole game.
TRAFFIK ↔ Omnicom · Publicis
Omnicom is routing client spend directly to publishers, and Publicis' $2.2B LiveRamp deal puts the identity layer rivals depend on under a competitor's roof.
Independents can sell a clean supply chain and neutral data right now, exactly when holdco clients are working out whether their first-party data enriches a competitor. Front-load this in new-business conversations.
CalVEBA ↔ CalPERS
CalPERS set 2026 health-plan premium increases averaging 8.21% (PPO Basic up 12.08%, Medicare plans up 10.78%), continuing years of above-inflation hikes.
CalVEBA's controlled-cost model and integrated wellness centers (including the new Chula Vista site) are direct answers to the sticker shock CalPERS members feel. Position CalVEBA as the lower-cost, higher-touch alternative for school and municipal employees.
Eternal Health ↔ Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts
BCBSMA Medicare Advantage members lost in-network access to Mass General Brigham primary care as of January 1, directing disrupted patients toward a limited window to switch plans in the core Eastern Massachusetts market.
Eternal Health's $0-premium, tech-forward model gives it a differentiated pitch for recruiter outreach targeting recently displaced MGB patients during the open windows.
BCBSM ↔ Humana
Humana is dropping coverage in 194 fewer US counties for 2026, exiting two states entirely and shedding an estimated 500,000 enrollees, with county-level pullbacks confirmed across the country.
Humana's retreat frees displaced MA members in Michigan markets where BCBSM competes. BCBSM holds the top CMS star rating in Michigan and can run a switching-season campaign as the stable, highest-rated alternative.
Santa Clara Family Health Plan ↔ Anthem Blue Cross
Anthem extended its contract with Santa Clara Valley Healthcare only through June 30, a short-term deal after the original nearly expired, leaving Anthem Medi-Cal patients uncertain about continuity at the county's main safety-net system.
SCFHP's full county coverage and county-government stability is a concrete contrast to Anthem's on-again, off-again negotiations. Arm SCFHP community outreach with the stability message before Anthem's next deadline.
Alignment Healthcare ↔ SCAN Health Plan
SCAN posted its largest-ever AEP gain, 127,000 new members (40.6% growth) to roughly 440,000, entering Santa Clara County and five new California counties, launching a Sutter Senior Advantage joint venture, and entering Washington State.
SCAN is taking share in the exact California counties Alignment competes in, with a nonprofit brand and a premium-system partner. Alignment should stress tech differentiation and lower out-of-pocket caps, and weight digital prospecting in LA, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino.
PIH Health ↔ Providence + Kaiser Permanente
Providence and Kaiser are jointly building a roughly $750M, 260-bed hospital in San Bernardino County (opening 2026), combining both systems' physician bases and extending their reach deeper into the Inland Empire.
Large multi-system partnerships are reshaping Southern California's hospital map. As an independent regional nonprofit, PIH must own its community-identity and local-expert narrative before bigger systems absorb the trusted-local position.
Loma Linda University Health ↔ Providence + Kaiser Permanente
The same $750M Providence-Kaiser joint hospital targets the High Desert and San Bernardino corridor that LLUMC-Murrieta serves from the south, bringing 260 beds and dual-system physician coverage to a fast-growing market.
LLU must make the case for its academic-depth plus whole-person-care model as distinct from a joint community-hospital offering, pairing medical-center depth with community proximity.
Balt Medical ↔ Medtronic
Medtronic agreed to acquire Scientia Vascular for $550M in March, its second 2026 deal, expanding its neurovascular access portfolio (guidewires and catheters for stroke and aneurysm) directly against Balt's core lines.
Medtronic is spending to lock up access-device navigation before smaller players capture it. Balt should counter on speed of innovation, physician-inspired design, and Irvine R&D proximity to clinical partners.
Edwards Lifesciences ↔ Medtronic
Medtronic made a $90M strategic investment in Anteris Technologies in January to advance the DurAVR biomimetic transcatheter heart valve, while holding roughly a third of global TAVR share with Evolut against Edwards' SAPIEN 3.
Medtronic is hedging Evolut by backing next-gen valve tech. Edwards should build the durability and long-term-outcomes evidence story now, alongside its continued SAPIEN iteration and purpose-led global-access narrative.
State of Colorado ↔ Colorado River Basin peer states
All seven Colorado River Basin states now have active drought declarations as of late May, positioning Colorado as one of the later states to reach a formal Phase 3 emergency even as conditions warrant it.
Colorado risks looking behind peer states on proactive response. A Phase 3 declaration needs strong public communication on what it means, what residents should do, and how the state is leading rather than lagging.
John Wayne Airport ↔ Ontario International Airport
Ontario launched the environmental review for its ONT BOLD expansion in May, a 650,000-sq-ft Terminal 3 plus modernized terminals and parking, explicitly aimed at capturing Inland Empire travelers, while projecting 2.2M summer passengers (up 6%) with new nonstops.
ONT is marketing itself as the lower-stress, growing alternative to LAX and SNA. John Wayne's capital-program messaging needs to counter the ONT-is-easier narrative with a clear story about what is new and better at SNA.
KDOT ↔ Iowa DOT
Iowa DOT won two AASHTO High Value Research Awards on May 29 for an overweight-vehicle pavement tool and leadership of a nine-state smart-work-zone speeding initiative, and its director won a national TSMO leadership award in March.
Iowa is building a research-innovation brand, exactly the profile KDOT's Drive to Zero plan aspires to. KDOT's Click It or Ticket work is solid but standard, so there is room to push a research-backed or multi-state differentiator.
Grand Junction ↔ City of Montrose
Montrose's 165-acre Colorado Outdoors riverfront project is pulling outdoor-economy businesses Grand Junction's Los Colonias targeted (Mayfly Outdoors chose Montrose), and Montrose's airport is adding LA and Nashville service.
Montrose is out-competing Grand Junction on outdoor-economy attraction and air-access perception at once. Grand Junction should sharpen differentiation on its larger workforce, the Colorado Mesa partnership, and broader airport network.
Miracles for Kids ↔ Ronald McDonald House Orange County
RMHOC's 17th Annual Walk for Kids on April 25 in Irvine raised a record $440,000 with 1,300-plus walkers, pulling significant donor dollars from the same OC family-services cause space in the same month as MFK's tea.
The donor-overlap window is narrow. MFK needs distinct positioning around its one-on-one family impact and housing-plus-financial-aid model to protect share of wallet with donors who may give to both.
Kansas State University ↔ University of Kansas
KU recommended a 4% in-state / 5% out-of-state tuition increase for 2026-27 pending the Board of Regents vote, while marketing its best-value public-university positioning, keeping KU and K-State at near-identical price points.
With both schools raising tuition at the same rate, differentiation cannot rest on price. K-State should lean on program distinctives, campus culture, and career outcomes to pull undecided Kansas prospects.
Colorado Mesa University ↔ Western Colorado University
Western Colorado launched the Gunnison Valley Promise for Fall 2026, free full tuition for all graduates of Gunnison Watershed district high schools, backed by a $4M endowment, as a local-retention play.
Western is going tuition-free for its feeder zone. CMU should make sure its Grand Junction scholarship initiatives are loud enough and counter in Mesa County on scholarship access plus new on-campus housing.
Central Washington University ↔ Eastern Washington University
EWU rebranded as the region's polytechnic, and by 2025-26 its cybersecurity major grew from 26 declared majors to 85 in one year, an explicit wedge to differentiate from CWU and Western in Washington's regional-university market.
EWU's applied-polytechnic pivot is working as a positioning wedge in the workforce-ready space. CWU needs a counter-narrative on its own career outcomes and hands-on programs before EWU's rebrand fully registers with Washington high schoolers.
University of Maine ↔ University of New Hampshire
UNH reported 2,471 freshman deposits by May (up 4% year-over-year, 275 over projection) with its highest-ever average incoming GPA and Honors enrollment up 20%, leaning on a best-value-in-New-England ranking.
UNH is growing freshmen while UMaine raises tuition amid a shortfall. UMaine should frame its R1 research status and Maine-specific aid as offsetting the cost gap before UNH's momentum compounds into a regional narrative.
VOOM ↔ Treace Medical Concepts (Lapiplasty)
On January 8, Treace completed the first surgical case with its new Lapiplasty Lightning system, designed to cut OR steps and improve 3-plane correction, with limited market release planned for mid-2026 and full commercialization by year-end.
Treace is accelerating its dominant Lapiplasty brand on a surgeon-friction story, the same adoption bottleneck VOOM is solving with training. Get VOOM's message in market before the mid-2026 release, on what Bunionplasty offers that a fusion-based correction does not, fusion-free, single-screw, faster recovery.
JenaValve ↔ Edwards Lifesciences
The FDA approved JenaValve's Trilogy on March 18, the first and only US device cleared for symptomatic severe aortic regurgitation. Trilogy anchors to native leaflets, bypassing the calcified landing zone that Edwards' SAPIEN TAVR requires, and SAPIEN is indicated for aortic stenosis, not regurgitation, a distinct population.
Edwards owns the aortic-stenosis TAVR market but has no approved transcatheter option for pure regurgitation. JenaValve's frame is patients who can't be treated by SAPIEN, which avoids a head-to-head with the leader and builds a defensible category.
The Oncology Institute ↔ Cencora / OneOncology
On February 2, Cencora completed its $4.6B cash purchase of the OneOncology majority stake it did not already own (about $7.4B enterprise value), creating a scaled physician-led community-oncology MSO inside Cencora's US Healthcare Solutions segment.
Cencora/OneOncology now has the capital and distribution to expand aggressively in the same independent-practice segment TOI operates in. TOI's differentiation should lean on local clinical relationships and patient experience, not balance-sheet scale.

One more thing
Three payer contracts went to the brink inside 14 days, BCBSM and Michigan Medicine, BayCare and UnitedHealthcare, Premera and MultiCare, and every one pulled back before the network went dark. Three games of chicken, zero crashes. Meanwhile a boutique-fitness brand sold out 300 franchise territories in its first year, then opened the next 300 the same week. Some weeks the whole story is just everyone deciding, at the last possible second, to keep going.
