Federal investigators say the three biggest Medicare Advantage insurers denied most post-acute care requests, then overturned up to 97% of them on appeal. For the health plans we run, that is the AEP opening of the year.

The biggest reputational event in Medicare Advantage this year landed on June 11, when the HHS Office of Inspector General released two reports finding the three largest MA insurers, UnitedHealth, Humana, and CVS/Aetna, denied prior authorization for long-term acute care and inpatient rehab at significantly higher rates than nearly all of their peers in 2024. Then the appeals told the real story, plans overturned 36% of long-term-care denials and 43% of inpatient-rehab denials, and reversed 95% of appealed skilled-nursing denials, including 97% of the denials issued by UnitedHealth's NaviHealth subsidiary. Investigators read the pattern as barriers built for profit rather than medical judgment, and it ran on AHA News, STAT, and Healthcare Dive the same day, so brokers and seniors will absorb the giants-deny-care framing fast. We think this reframes the entire 2027 AEP conversation around trust and approval speed, and it favors smaller, member-first plans, which describes Alignment, Clever Care, Eternal Health, SCFHP, and TOI. The plans that approve care quickly and overturn rarely should say so out loud now, on their own numbers, before the giants do the framing for them. It also pairs with the June 18 CMS move to recalculate 2026 star ratings and reopen the 2027 bid window, which hands fast-reading plans real bonus dollars to put back into benefits. —LM

No fresh in-window news from Edwards Lifesciences, JenaValve, BCBSM, Balt, CalVEBA, VOOM, or PIH this week. The whole vertical points one direction, the three biggest MA carriers are taking reputational fire on denials at the same moment CMS rewrites the 2027 bid and bonus math. That is a rare double opening for member-first plans.

HHS watchdog names UnitedHealth, Humana, and CVS for the highest post-acute denial rates in Medicare Advantage.

On June 11 the HHS Office of Inspector General released two reports finding the three largest Medicare Advantage organizations denied prior authorization for long-term acute care and inpatient rehab at significantly higher rates than nearly all peers in 2024. On appeal, plans overturned 36% of long-term-care-hospital denials, 43% of inpatient-rehab denials, and 95% of appealed skilled-nursing denials, including 97% of denials issued by UnitedHealth's NaviHealth.

CMS reopens 2026 Medicare Advantage star ratings and 2027 bids, steering bonus dollars back to insurers.

On June 18 CMS confirmed it is recalculating 2026 Medicare Advantage star ratings, cutting 11 administrative-process measures, reinstating a quality-bonus structure for consistently high-rated contracts, and reopening the 2027 bid window so plans can re-file. The agency framed the shift as refocusing stars on clinical outcomes and rolled back prior health-equity weighting.

Fairview drops UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage for 2027, citing denials and payment fights.

On June 12 Fairview Health Services told patients it will stop scheduling UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage members starting January 1, 2027, emailing about 11,000 patients with 35,000 mailed letters to follow. Fairview cited ongoing coverage changes, denials, and payment issues, one more name on a 2026 list of health systems walking away from MA contracts over prior-auth friction.

Our take
The denial story is the single biggest AEP gift our health plans will get this year. When federal investigators say the giants deny most post-acute care and reverse up to 97% of it on appeal, every plan with a clean approval record has a trust wedge it should drive now, on its own numbers, not by naming a competitor. Pair that with CMS reopening 2027 bids and restoring bonuses, and the plans that re-model fast walk into October with both a sharper message and more benefit dollars to spend.
What we ship
Pull each MA client's prior-auth turnaround and appeal-overturn stats and draft a trust-forward we-say-yes AEP concept (broker one-pager plus member creative) by Mon Jun 22. Build a one-page brief on what the CMS recalculation does to each plan's 2027 bid and where the restored bonus dollars can fund supplemental benefits. Draft a network-confidence kit for plan clients off the Fairview-UHC exit.

Pulse
John Wayne Airport produced no primary-sourced item inside the seven-day window, so we held it rather than cite an unverifiable post. KDOT's signing project and Grand Junction's river-corridor plan are the steady-stewardship stories this week, while the Colorado primary is less a campaign for us to run than a market condition every Colorado buy has to plan around through June 30.

KDOT launches a $1.2M sign-replacement project across five south-central Kansas counties.

KDOT is starting a roughly $1.2M signing project the week of June 15, centered in Kingman County and reaching into Harper, Pratt, Sedgwick, and Sumner counties. Crews are installing new high-performance flat-sheet signs and posts along U.S. 54, K-11, K-14, K-42, and U.S. 400, with minimal traffic impact and work running through the 2026 construction season.

Colorado's June 30 governor's primary turns into a heavily scrutinized ad war as ballots land.

With Colorado primary ballots mailed from June 8 and due June 30, the Democratic governor's race has become a heavily scrutinized paid-media contest. On June 16 Colorado Politics reported a disclaimer dispute that forced down a round of Bennet TV ads, underscoring how heavy the final-stretch broadcast and connected-TV spend has become.

Grand Junction opens its draft river corridor master plan to public input.

On June 15 Grand Junction City Council reviewed a draft Grand Valley River Corridor Master Plan balancing wildlife protection, recreation, and development along the Colorado and Gunnison rivers, and invited residents into the process through public workshops scheduled for later this summer.

Our take
KDOT and Grand Junction both hand us low-drama, high-trust stories that convert routine government work into visible proof of stewardship, and those travel well on local social and earned media. The sharper money move is Colorado, the June 30 primary is pushing CPMs up and avails down across Denver, Colorado Springs, and the Western Slope, so any non-political Colorado messaging we place this month should shift weight to after the primary or pay the crowded-auction premium.
What we ship
Ship KDOT a short social post and local-media note framing the $1.2M signing project as clearer, safer rural roads, with a five-county map. Pull current Colorado CTV and broadcast CPM/avail trends and flag the June-30 crowd-out to State of Colorado, Grand Junction, and Colorado Mesa with pacing recommendations. Draft Grand Junction a resident-facing awareness package to drive river-corridor workshop turnout.

Pulse
Quiet week under the 7-day gate. Miracles for Kids has no fresh in-window news (its newsroom tops out at the May 12 Miracles in Bloom Tea, which raised record funds with 300 guests), and Breath of Spirit surfaced only evergreen ministry pages. The sector signal is donor concentration, the 2026 DAF Fundraising Report (June 8) shows donor-advised funds climbing from 7% to 11% of nonprofit revenue since 2021, with DAF retention at 59% versus 46% for traditional donors and average DAF gifts near $3,934. Both fresh items land June 8, three days before our window, so we hold them as context.
Our take
Nothing fresh enough to act on this week, so the nonprofit move is preparation, not reaction. The DAF concentration data is the thread worth holding, a shrinking set of larger, stickier donors now drives a rising share of revenue, which argues for naming and cultivating MFK's DAF-capable donors before the Q4 giving season rather than running broad acquisition.

SEQUEL's other concepts (Body20, iFlex, Beem) had no fresh in-window news, and the Xponential franchise-settlement story we tracked dated June 9-10, just outside the seven-day gate. The Leawood launch is the week's clean signal, and it is exactly the local-owner, earned-attention model SEQUEL is betting the whole 300-territory portfolio on.

Pilates Addiction lands in Leawood with a World Cup-timed community launch.

SEQUEL Brands' fastest-growing concept, Pilates Addiction, announced its Leawood, Kansas studio at 11560 Ash Street under owner-operators Kirk and Tara Belz. The pre-opening push is built around two FIFA World Cup community events, a Match Day gathering June 16 and a Town Center Tailgate July 11, with attendees entered to win tickets to a World Cup match at Arrowhead Stadium. Founding memberships are selling at presale rates ahead of the grand opening.

Our take
The Leawood playbook is the one worth packaging for every franchisee, build a local following with a real community moment before the doors open instead of buying it back later with paid acquisition. Anchoring a studio launch to a global event like the World Cup beats a generic presale email, and the mechanics travel to every market on the map. The risk in the SEQUEL story is still opening studios on time, so the more launches that run this clean, the better the unit economics hold.
What we ship
Package the Leawood approach into a launch-activation template for SEQUEL franchisees by Tue Jun 23, a local-event tie-in calendar (sports, civic, seasonal) plus presale offer mechanics, so new owners can replicate it without reinventing it each time. Add a one-pager Anthony and the franchise-development team can hand to prospective operators.

Champlain's Montreal and Dublin campuses close June 30 as its Temple study-abroad partnership goes live (announced last fall, see LOCAL INTEL and DEADLINES). The demographic-cliff data we led with last week still frames the whole vertical, and the July 1 loan overhaul now puts a hard date on the graduate-yield squeeze that data predicted.

Federal student-loan overhaul hits July 1, ending Grad PLUS and capping grad borrowing at $100K.

A sweeping set of federal student-loan changes takes effect July 1, ending the Grad PLUS program for new borrowers and imposing a new $100,000 lifetime cap on graduate borrowing (the SAVE repayment plan phases out separately by 2028). The changes squeeze graduate-program affordability and yield at exactly the schools that lean on master's and professional enrollment.

Kansas Board of Regents approves a 4% K-State tuition increase amid state budget cuts.

On June 17 the Kansas Board of Regents approved tuition increases at most state universities, including a 4% resident increase at Kansas State, as schools absorb state budget pressure and rising costs. Families will feel the new number right as fall enrollment decisions firm up.

University of Maine System opens a chancellor search as Malloy heads for a 2028 exit.

On June 12 the University of Maine System confirmed it has about two years to find its next chancellor, with Dannel Malloy set to step down in 2028. The search opens during a budget-pressured stretch for the system, putting leadership stability on the agenda alongside enrollment and capital decisions.

Our take
The July 1 loan overhaul turns the graduate-enrollment slide from a slow trend into a deadline. Ending Grad PLUS and capping grad borrowing at $100K hits master's and professional programs first, which is where several of our schools defend margin. The schools that get ahead of it, naming the change for admitted grad students, repackaging aid, and steering messaging toward the health and engineering programs still growing, protect yield while slower peers lose deposits over a financing gap they never explained.
What we ship
Send each higher-ed client a one-page July-1 loan-change brief for admitted and prospective graduate students (what changes, what it means for their cost, and the aid options that offset it) by Mon Jun 22. For Kansas State, stage a value-first scholarship-and-outcomes campaign that lands before the approved 4% increase sets in. Keep the demographic-cliff yield-defense plan from last week live across all seven schools.

The week's signal is a media-buying one, and we read it strictly as math and audience strategy, not politics. A record cycle means advertisers competing for the same youth audiences as TPUSA face higher prices and more clutter the longer they wait, and the down-ballot and issue-advocacy segment driving the revision is exactly where TPUSA sits.

AdImpact raises the 2026 cycle forecast to a record $11.6B, with $4B already spent through June.

AdImpact lifted its 2026 election-cycle ad-spend projection to $11.6 billion, up from $10.8 billion, the highest figure ever for a political season. Spend reached $4 billion through June 1, running 46% ahead of the same point in the 2024 presidential cycle, and analysts pointed to down-ballot and issue-advocacy advertisers (TPUSA's exact category) as the reason digital was revised upward.

Connected TV is the only digital channel projected to grow this cycle, set to reach $2.7B.

AdImpact raised its CTV political projection by $300 million to $2.7 billion, naming connected TV the fastest-growing channel and the only media type forecast to gain over the 2024 presidential cycle. Broadcast still leads in absolute dollars at $5.6 billion but is growing only about 1%, while CTV pairs digital-grade targeting with the cord-cutting younger audience broadcast misses.

Our take
We advise on the buy and the data, not the program. With $4B already spent and pacing 46% ahead of 2024, the read for a youth-audience advertiser is to front-load reserved inventory and audience segments now rather than buy into a crowded fall auction. CTV is the one channel where reach is actually expanding and it reaches the cord-cutters broadcast can't, so it is the first place to test budget against the youth segments broadcast under-delivers.
What we ship
Send TPUSA a one-page read on what the $11.6B forecast and 46% early pace mean for summer flighting, recommending front-loaded reserved buys before fall pricing peaks. Model a CTV test against their current channel mix, sizing reach and frequency on the youth segments broadcast misses, and pull a competitive-density read on the digital audience pools they buy against.

Pulse
Cannes Lions runs June 22-26, and the pre-festival week turned into a platform arms race. The throughline behind every headline, OpenAI's ad stack, Meta's commerce loop, the agentic connectors every platform now ships, is that the keystroke work of media buying is being absorbed by software on a visible timeline, while the business backdrop (in-housing, layoffs, optimism below half) puts pressure on shops that only sell media management.

OpenAI launches its own ad stack with first-party audience uploads and generative creative tools.

OpenAI unveiled advertising tools that let brands upload customer lists and first-party data to build custom audiences, alongside AI creative tools that generate, modify, localize, translate, and optimize ad assets from advertiser files. The move puts OpenAI in direct competition with Meta and Google on the chat surface where buyers increasingly start.

Meta floods the zone before Cannes with global live-video ads and one-tap virtual-card checkout.

Ahead of Cannes Lions, Meta introduced global live-video advertising across Facebook and Instagram, a one-time virtual-card checkout built with Visa and Mastercard, and a worldwide affiliate push adding Flipkart, Lazada, and Mercado Libre. Meta says its AI recommendation engine now reaches 3.5 billion people daily, closing the loop from discovery to creative to checkout to attribution inside its own apps.

Publicis CEO calls out AI 'pitch-maxxing' as a cause of industry job cuts.

Publicis Groupe CEO Arthur Sadoun publicly warned that over-promising on AI and unsustainable commercial offers in pitches are driving massive job cuts across advertising. Publicis released a satirical film, The Wrong Promises, and steered its Cannes sessions toward measurable results over AI demos.

Ad Age's 2026 Agency Report puts optimism below half as in-housing and layoffs accelerate.

Ad Age's 2026 survey found fewer than half of agency professionals (48.8%) feel optimistic about digital advertising's future, down from 62.8% in 2024. Some 65.3% had clients move work in-house in the past year, nearly 40% conducted layoffs, and roughly nine in ten believe AI threatens core revenue, even as AI is used at virtually every agency.

Our take
A third ad giant now sits next to Meta and Google, and all three are absorbing targeting and creative into the platform. For a mid-size full-service shop, the media-buying moat keeps shrinking, so the defensible work moves up the chain to brand, strategy, creative, first-party data hygiene, and the judgment to direct AI agents rather than compete with them. When even Publicis says the AI pitch has outrun reality, buyers start asking for proof, which favors agencies that show real outcomes over a slick demo. That is a posture TRAFFIK can own.
What we ship
Test OpenAI's audience and creative tools against a live Meta and Google benchmark for one DTC or healthcare client and write a one-page POV on where ChatGPT placements fit the 2026 media mix. On June 12 the University of Maine System confirmed it has about two years to find its next chancellor, with Dannel Malloy stepping down in 2028. The search opens during a budget-pressured stretch, putting leadership stability on the agenda alongside enrollment and a $177M-plus capital push, with R1 research status intact.
A leadership transition during budget pressure creates uncertainty. Lean enrollment creative on institutional momentum, R1 research status, and construction progress to project stability through the search.
SEQUEL Brands · IRVINE · CALIFORNIA
SEQUEL launched its fifth franchise concept, Ultimate Longevity Center, in December with biohacker Gary Brecka and Tony Robbins' Lifeforce platform, targeting the longevity economy with experiential-wellness and premium-concierge tiers. It arrives as Xponential Fitness reports slowing franchise sales under a new CEO.
Run paid search and social to franchise investors in the SoCal and Phoenix corridor now, while Xponential's instability is in the news. Lean on Geisler's track record and the Brecka/Robbins credibility, not the modalities.
Turning Point USA · PHOENIX · ARIZONA
Phoenix is the de facto headquarters of the US out-of-home advertising industry, with Lamar, Clear Channel, OUTFRONT, and Branded Cities all maintaining offices there. TPUSA also drew a large, registration-verified audience to a Phoenix-area event in April, producing a documented high-propensity attendee file.
We advise on the math, not the politics. Phoenix's OOH infrastructure and large captive event audiences make it efficient for event-adjacent media buys, with geo-targeted digital OOH near venues and post-event retargeting on the verified attendee list.
VOOM · BRENTWOOD · TENNESSEE
Voom Medical Devices, maker of the Bunionplasty 360 Repair procedure and its Revcon single-screw system, closed a $30M debt-and-equity round led by Avenue Capital, earmarked to expand its program to 1,000-plus trained Bunionplasty surgeons nationwide off a base it describes as 3x year-over-year growth.
VOOM is onboarding surgeons at scale, so the conversion point is surgeon discovery and credentialing, not device specs. Target foot-and-ankle orthopedic surgeons by specialty and geography, with landing pages built around the one-on-one training program.
Edwards Lifesciences · IRVINE · CALIFORNIA
Edwards reported Q1 2026 net sales of $1.65B, up 12.7% in constant currency, with TAVR up 11% and the TMTT mitral/tricuspid segment up 42%, and raised full-year guidance to 9-11%. It also reaffirmed its Every Heartbeat Matters initiative, targeting 2 million more underserved structural-heart patients by 2030.
Edwards is growing its premium core and funding global access at the same time, two messages that reinforce each other for payors, physicians, and policymakers. Align any Edwards work to both the performance and the patient-access narratives.
John Wayne Airport · SANTA ANA · CALIFORNIA
John Wayne Airport's $700M-plus Capital Improvement Program (2025-2028) includes a nearly $50M terminal concessions overhaul. Eight new local and national operators, including Wahoo's Fish Taco, Left Coast Brewery, and The Habit Burger Grill, took over roughly 37,000 sq ft, with a February 19 ribbon-cutting and a projected $11.4M in annual revenue on 15-year leases.
SNA is telling an OC sense-of-place story tied to real capital investment, deliberately choosing Costa Mesa, San Clemente, and Irvine tenants. Pitch campaign work that leans into that local-brand differentiator.

Competitor moves

SEQUEL ↔ Club Pilates / Aligned Fitness
Aligned Fitness bought six Club Pilates studios in central New Jersey on June 9, pushing to 61 studios across multiple states and entering a new market, with leadership signaling more roll-ups.
Multi-unit operators are consolidating Pilates fast, and they are exactly the experienced, well-capitalized buyers Pilates Addiction should court as the ground-floor alternative to maxed-out Club Pilates territories.
Clever Care · Eternal Health · all MA plans ↔ UnitedHealth · Humana · CVS
On June 11 the HHS OIG named the three largest MA carriers for significantly higher post-acute denial rates than nearly all peers, with up to 97% of skilled-nursing denials overturned on appeal.
The giants are taking reputational fire on denials right as AEP prep opens. Every member-first plan with a clean approval record has a trust wedge it should drive now, on its own numbers, without naming a competitor.
Champlain · CSUN · UVA · all higher-ed ↔ The July 1 federal loan overhaul
A sweeping federal student-loan change takes effect July 1, ending Grad PLUS for new borrowers, sunsetting SAVE, and capping graduate borrowing at $100,000, squeezing master's and professional-program affordability.
The graduate-yield slide now has a deadline. The schools that name the change for admitted grad students and repackage aid before deposits firm up protect yield while slower peers lose students over a financing gap they never explained.
TRAFFIK ↔ OpenAI · Meta · Google
On Cannes week OpenAI launched its own ad stack (first-party audience uploads plus generative creative), Meta added global live-video ads and one-tap checkout, and every major platform shipped agent connectors that let software run campaign setup.
A third ad giant now sits next to Meta and Google, and all three are absorbing targeting and creative. The media-buying moat shrinks, so independents win on brand, strategy, first-party data hygiene, and the judgment to direct AI agents, not compete with them.
CalVEBA ↔ CalPERS
CalPERS set 2026 health-plan premium increases averaging 8.21% (PPO Basic up 12.08%, Medicare plans up 10.78%), continuing years of above-inflation hikes.
CalVEBA's controlled-cost model and integrated wellness centers (including the new Chula Vista site) are direct answers to the sticker shock CalPERS members feel. Position CalVEBA as the lower-cost, higher-touch alternative for school and municipal employees.
Eternal Health ↔ Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts
BCBSMA Medicare Advantage members lost in-network access to Mass General Brigham primary care as of January 1, directing disrupted patients toward a limited window to switch plans in the core Eastern Massachusetts market.
Eternal Health's $0-premium, tech-forward model gives it a differentiated pitch for recruiter outreach targeting recently displaced MGB patients during the open windows.
BCBSM ↔ Humana
Humana is dropping coverage in 194 fewer US counties for 2026, exiting two states entirely and shedding an estimated 500,000 enrollees, with county-level pullbacks confirmed across the country.
Humana's retreat frees displaced MA members in Michigan markets where BCBSM competes. BCBSM holds the top CMS star rating in Michigan and can run a switching-season campaign as the stable, highest-rated alternative.
Santa Clara Family Health Plan ↔ Anthem Blue Cross
Anthem extended its contract with Santa Clara Valley Healthcare only through June 30, a short-term deal after the original nearly expired, leaving Anthem Medi-Cal patients uncertain about continuity at the county's main safety-net system.
SCFHP's full county coverage and county-government stability is a concrete contrast to Anthem's on-again, off-again negotiations. Arm SCFHP community outreach with the stability message before Anthem's next deadline.
Alignment Healthcare ↔ SCAN Health Plan
SCAN posted its largest-ever AEP gain, 127,000 new members (40.6% growth) to roughly 440,000, entering Santa Clara County and five new California counties, launching a Sutter Senior Advantage joint venture, and entering Washington State.
SCAN is taking share in the exact California counties Alignment competes in, with a nonprofit brand and a premium-system partner. Alignment should stress tech differentiation and lower out-of-pocket caps, and weight digital prospecting in LA, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino.
PIH Health ↔ Providence + Kaiser Permanente
Providence and Kaiser are jointly building a roughly $750M, 260-bed hospital in San Bernardino County (opening 2026), combining both systems' physician bases and extending their reach deeper into the Inland Empire.
Large multi-system partnerships are reshaping Southern California's hospital map. As an independent regional nonprofit, PIH must own its community-identity and local-expert narrative before bigger systems absorb the trusted-local position.
Loma Linda University Health ↔ Providence + Kaiser Permanente
The same $750M Providence-Kaiser joint hospital targets the High Desert and San Bernardino corridor that LLUMC-Murrieta serves from the south, bringing 260 beds and dual-system physician coverage to a fast-growing market.
LLU must make the case for its academic-depth plus whole-person-care model as distinct from a joint community-hospital offering, pairing medical-center depth with community proximity.
Balt Medical ↔ Medtronic
Medtronic agreed to acquire Scientia Vascular for $550M in March, its second 2026 deal, expanding its neurovascular access portfolio (guidewires and catheters for stroke and aneurysm) directly against Balt's core lines.
Medtronic is spending to lock up access-device navigation before smaller players capture it. Balt should counter on speed of innovation, physician-inspired design, and Irvine R&D proximity to clinical partners.
Edwards Lifesciences ↔ Medtronic
Medtronic made a $90M strategic investment in Anteris Technologies in January to advance the DurAVR biomimetic transcatheter heart valve, while holding roughly a third of global TAVR share with Evolut against Edwards' SAPIEN 3.
Medtronic is hedging Evolut by backing next-gen valve tech. Edwards should build the durability and long-term-outcomes evidence story now, alongside its continued SAPIEN iteration and purpose-led global-access narrative.
State of Colorado ↔ Colorado River Basin peer states
All seven Colorado River Basin states now have active drought declarations as of late May, positioning Colorado as one of the later states to reach a formal Phase 3 emergency even as conditions warrant it.
Colorado risks looking behind peer states on proactive response. A Phase 3 declaration needs strong public communication on what it means, what residents should do, and how the state is leading rather than lagging.
John Wayne Airport ↔ Ontario International Airport
Ontario launched the environmental review for its ONT BOLD expansion in May, a 650,000-sq-ft Terminal 3 plus modernized terminals and parking, explicitly aimed at capturing Inland Empire travelers, while projecting 2.2M summer passengers (up 6%) with new nonstops.
ONT is marketing itself as the lower-stress, growing alternative to LAX and SNA. John Wayne's capital-program messaging needs to counter the ONT-is-easier narrative with a clear story about what is new and better at SNA.
KDOT ↔ Iowa DOT
Iowa DOT won two AASHTO High Value Research Awards on May 29 for an overweight-vehicle pavement tool and leadership of a nine-state smart-work-zone speeding initiative, and its director won a national TSMO leadership award in March.
Iowa is building a research-innovation brand, exactly the profile KDOT's Drive to Zero plan aspires to. KDOT's Click It or Ticket work is solid but standard, so there is room to push a research-backed or multi-state differentiator.
Grand Junction ↔ City of Montrose
Montrose's 165-acre Colorado Outdoors riverfront project is pulling outdoor-economy businesses Grand Junction's Los Colonias targeted (Mayfly Outdoors chose Montrose), and Montrose's airport is adding LA and Nashville service.
Montrose is out-competing Grand Junction on outdoor-economy attraction and air-access perception at once. Grand Junction should sharpen differentiation on its larger workforce, the Colorado Mesa partnership, and broader airport network.
Miracles for Kids ↔ Ronald McDonald House Orange County
RMHOC's 17th Annual Walk for Kids on April 25 in Irvine raised a record $440,000 with 1,300-plus walkers, pulling significant donor dollars from the same OC family-services cause space in the same month as MFK's tea.
The donor-overlap window is narrow. MFK needs distinct positioning around its one-on-one family impact and housing-plus-financial-aid model to protect share of wallet with donors who may give to both.
Kansas State University ↔ University of Kansas
KU recommended a 4% in-state / 5% out-of-state tuition increase for 2026-27 pending the Board of Regents vote, while marketing its best-value public-university positioning, keeping KU and K-State at near-identical price points.
With both schools raising tuition at the same rate, differentiation cannot rest on price. K-State should lean on program distinctives, campus culture, and career outcomes to pull undecided Kansas prospects.
Colorado Mesa University ↔ Western Colorado University
Western Colorado launched the Gunnison Valley Promise for Fall 2026, free full tuition for all graduates of Gunnison Watershed district high schools, backed by a $4M endowment, as a local-retention play.
Western is going tuition-free for its feeder zone. CMU should make sure its Grand Junction scholarship initiatives are loud enough and counter in Mesa County on scholarship access plus new on-campus housing.
Central Washington University ↔ Eastern Washington University
EWU rebranded as the region's polytechnic, and by 2025-26 its cybersecurity major grew from 26 declared majors to 85 in one year, an explicit wedge to differentiate from CWU and Western in Washington's regional-university market.
EWU's applied-polytechnic pivot is working as a positioning wedge in the workforce-ready space. CWU needs a counter-narrative on its own career outcomes and hands-on programs before EWU's rebrand fully registers with Washington high schoolers.
University of Maine ↔ University of New Hampshire
UNH reported 2,471 freshman deposits by May (up 4% year-over-year, 275 over projection) with its highest-ever average incoming GPA and Honors enrollment up 20%, leaning on a best-value-in-New-England ranking.
UNH is growing freshmen while UMaine raises tuition amid a shortfall. UMaine should frame its R1 research status and Maine-specific aid as offsetting the cost gap before UNH's momentum compounds into a regional narrative.
VOOM ↔ Treace Medical Concepts (Lapiplasty)
On January 8, Treace completed the first surgical case with its new Lapiplasty Lightning system, designed to cut OR steps and improve 3-plane correction, with limited market release planned for mid-2026 and full commercialization by year-end.
Treace is accelerating its dominant Lapiplasty brand on a surgeon-friction story, the same adoption bottleneck VOOM is solving with training. Get VOOM's message in market before the mid-2026 release, on what Bunionplasty offers that a fusion-based correction does not, fusion-free, single-screw, faster recovery.
JenaValve ↔ Edwards Lifesciences
The FDA approved JenaValve's Trilogy on March 18, the first and only US device cleared for symptomatic severe aortic regurgitation. Trilogy anchors to native leaflets, bypassing the calcified landing zone that Edwards' SAPIEN TAVR requires, and SAPIEN is indicated for aortic stenosis, not regurgitation, a distinct population.
Edwards owns the aortic-stenosis TAVR market but has no approved transcatheter option for pure regurgitation. JenaValve's frame is patients who can't be treated by SAPIEN, which avoids a head-to-head with the leader and builds a defensible category.
The Oncology Institute ↔ Cencora / OneOncology
On February 2, Cencora completed its $4.6B cash purchase of the OneOncology majority stake it did not already own (about $7.4B enterprise value), creating a scaled physician-led community-oncology MSO inside Cencora's US Healthcare Solutions segment.
Cencora/OneOncology now has the capital and distribution to expand aggressively in the same independent-practice segment TOI operates in. TOI's differentiation should lean on local clinical relationships and patient experience, not balance-sheet scale.

One more thing
The same week federal investigators said the three biggest health insurers deny care for profit, OpenAI walked into Cannes with an ad stack, Meta added a one-tap checkout, and every major platform quietly opened its pipes so software (not humans) can run the media buy. And in Leawood, Kansas, a brand-new Pilates studio decided the smartest way to sell memberships was a World Cup tailgate with a shot at Arrowhead Stadium tickets. The machines are taking the keystrokes. The humans are throwing the party. We think that split is the whole story of 2026.
